Materials

Vicomtesse Noailles At The Ball Masque.

O1

1929.

The architect

Jean – Michel Frank

organises a costume party

with the theme “Materials”.

The vicomtesse

Marie-Laure de Noailles

- c. villa noailles at hyères -

makes her appearance

wearing

a supremely non-functional dress

made out of sharkskin

[Frank’s signature].

Aknowledging that modern design involved

sensuality, display & humour

as much as it was a serious attempt

to engineer the future.
